Child Safety Standards

Effective: September 11, 2026

Odd Question LLC ("we") publishes these standards for Odd Question, the daily polling app and website at oddquestion.app, and for The Institute, the research desk that publishes its findings. They apply to every member, every Circle, and every poll on the service.

The rule

Child sexual abuse and exploitation (CSAE) of any kind is prohibited on Odd Question. This includes child sexual abuse material (CSAM), sexualized depictions or descriptions of minors, grooming, sextortion, the trafficking of minors, and any attempt to use the service to contact, solicit, or harm a child. We remove it, we ban the accounts behind it, and we report it.

Who may use the service

Odd Question is for people aged 13 and up. Every account states a birthday at sign-up; accounts that report an age under 13 are refused. Members aged 13 to 17 are placed in the age band their birthday puts them in and see only the content written for that band.

How the product limits contact

  • There is no open-ended chat, group messaging, comments, or photo or video sharing between members. Content passes between members in two bounded ways — polls, and single question-and-answer exchanges between confirmed friends, never a back-and-forth thread — and every one is reviewed before the other person sees it.
  • Friends are added by mutual consent: both people must add each other. A member can block or remove anyone at any time, and can separately stop just one friend's anonymous or unmasked questions from reaching them without ending the friendship.
  • Contact matching sends only scrambled (hashed) phone numbers, and only people who chose to be findable appear.
  • Circle names, poll questions, answer options, and the questions and answers members write to each other all go through automated review before display. Anything that fails review is held for a person to look at.

Reporting

Every poll, every Circle, and every question a member sends another member carries a Report option. Reports about a child's safety are handled first, by a person, within 24 hours. You can also write to us directly:

  • Email: hello@oddquestion.app — put "child safety" in the subject line.
  • Phone: (202) 688-5119

You do not need an account to make a report, and you may report anonymously.

What we do with a report

  1. Content that is CSAM, or that we reasonably believe is CSAM, is removed immediately and preserved only as the law requires for reporting.
  2. We report apparent CSAM to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) through its CyberTipline, and to law enforcement where the law requires it.
  3. The accounts involved are banned. We do not restore them.
  4. We cooperate with lawful requests from law enforcement and child-protection agencies.

Compliance

We comply with the child safety laws that apply to us, including United States federal law on the reporting of apparent child sexual abuse material (18 U.S.C. § 2258A) and the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). We review these standards at least once a year and whenever the product changes in a way that affects minors.
